What’s the TVA doing with Deadpool, why are so many confirmed cast members not shown, and was that You Know Who?
Folks, we need to talk about the Deadpool and Wolverine trailer. There’s a lot to digest here.
Who Gets a Birthday Party Invite?
Fellow Marvel fans, please take a moment to watch this teaser trailer if you haven’t yet.
Marvel waited until the Super Bowl to air the first clip for the previously untitled Deadpool 3 project.

Now we know the name and some of the storylines in this film.
For starters, we know who is on Wade Wilson’s nice list, as the teaser starts with a birthday party for Deadpool.
If you blink, you’ll miss several of the attendants, but we’re eight years into the Deadpool Cinematic Universe.

So, we have a full list of characters, including Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, and…Rob Delaney as Peter.
Yes, we see one of the few surviving members of X-Force, as well as some X-Men like Negasonic Teenage Warhead and her girlfriend, Yukio.
Also present are Karan Soni as Dopinder and Randal Reeder as Buck, who got one line last time.

Not present are all the people who got canceled since the last film came out, which is a disproportionately large number of celebrities.
That’s the danger in walking the fine line with comedians and actors. Let’s be honest that TJ Miller and Gina Carano aren’t coming back.
Still, the gang’s (mostly) all here during that first happy shot, which features a distinctly weathered Wade Wilson.
Wait, Does Deadpool Meet Loki?

There’s no obvious sign that Deadpool and Loki meet during the third film.
However, they appear to be coworkers now, as Loki just spent a season taking control of the Time Variance Authority.
Who should show up for Wade Wilson’s birthday other than Paradox, a member of the TVA?

Paradox, as played by that dude who won Succession, Matthew Macfayden.
If you didn’t know – and why would you? – Ouroboros and Paradox represent two iterations of Mobius M Mobius in the comics.
So, this is the same character that Owen Wilson has previously portrayed on Loki…and Ke Huy Quan technically did as well.

Apparently, Paradox needs Deadpool to reset the timeline, a belief that raises more questions than it answers.
Based on everything we know about the TVA, its members are methodical and forward-thinking.
Choosing Deadpool to salvage the timeline is akin to setting a caffeinated puppy free in an antique store.
Deadpool…the Avenger?

Paradox makes his pitch to Deadpool by describing the latter individual as “a hero among heroes.” That’s….one interpretation.
Anyway, Paradox shows highlights of various Avengers in action.
The three displayed on the screens are Iron, Man, Hulk, and Thor.

Then, all three screens cut to shots of Steve Rogers in action.
At this point, actor Ryan Reynolds breaks the fourth wall for the second time and says, “Your little cinematic universe is about to change forever.”

On one hand, that’s a joke about how Marvel’s owner, Disney, really needs Deadpool and Wolverine to become a blockbuster.
On the other hand, Deadpool is referring to the film’s plot, which includes several previous Marvel performers returning to the fold.

Meet a Different Professor X

As a gentle reminder, we’ve seen Professor X before in a Deadpool film.
Actor James McAvoy played the younger version of the character in Deadpool. He was uncredited, but he was there.

Now, we’re getting the older version of the leader of the X-Men in Deadpool and Wolverine.
I think that’s him in the trailer, too. Well, it’s either the back of his head or Baron Von Rashke’s.

Actually, I guess it could be Nosferatu. Anyway, the point is that we see some creepy, decrepit bald head almost exactly midway through the trailer.
This brief glimpse hints at the heart of the story, which is that Deadpool will interact with various X-Men characters.

We know that actors will return to iconic roles like Professor X and Magneto, but we’ll also watch less beloved ones like Jennifer Garner’s Elektra.
Apparently, everyone is fair game for this film, as demonstrated by the fact that Aaron Stanford will be back as Pyro.

We haven’t seen him in this role since 2006. In fact, we haven’t seen him in many roles at all since then.
So, seeing his face in this trailer – and him getting to quip – is a sure sign that everything is in play here.
You never know who might show their face in Deadpool 3…and what they’ll say.

Still, the most exciting appearances, due to who they are and what they represent, are undoubtedly real-life BFFs Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen.
I can’t wait to watch Professor X and Magneto bicker again.
Also Appearing…Victor Von Doom?

Okay, we don’t know for sure yet that Doctor Doom will appear in Deadpool and Wolverine.
Yes, Marvel insiders have strongly suggested that the Latverian ruler will rise at some point in Marvel Phase Five or Phase Six.
The Deadpool trailer definitely wants to get people anticipating that possibility.
At the 1:48 mark of the trailer, a masked individual employs tech to create a shield/barrier, satellite dish, or something like that.
That cowled character absolutely looks like Victor Von Doom. Is it? Who knows.
This film strikes me as the type of prestige project – yes, I know how ridiculous that sounds – to debut the character in the MCU.

Also, we know that Fantastic Four will start shooting soon. So, this appearance would fit the timeline.
Conversely, a masked military figure in a cowl could be anybody. As such, I’m taking a wait-and-see approach here, but…
A Comic Book Teaser

During the climactic moments of this commercial, we witness Wade Wilson laying on the ground in the desert.
Eventually, a shadow looms over him, and it’s obviously Wolverine.

If you’re ridiculous enough to pause the video at the two-minute mark – and countless fans were – you’ll spot an Easter egg.
Fans have blown up this image to confirm that it’s a copy of Secret Wars issue number five.
Do you know which comic book character is on the cover of that particular issue? Yes, it’s Victor Von Doom.

Similarly, eagle-eyed fans have put two-and-two together on the background here.
We can spot a destroyed Helicarrier and one of those aliens from the Battle of New York. This place is a wasteland.
Now seems like a good time to mention that Marvel once released an Old Man Logan offshoot comic named…Wastelanders: Doctor Doom.

The pieces seem to fit. At this point, unless Marvel is totally messing with its biggest fans, this is a Doctor Doom sighting.
Marvel just gave you another reason to watch Deadpool and Wolverine on opening night.
