With Only One Film Set To Be Released This Year, Marvel Lays Off 15 Employees

With only one film set to be released this year (Deadpool & Wolverine), Marvel Studios and Marvel Entertainment have laid off fifteen employees.

At Marvel Studios, which is headquartered in Burbank, California, those let go included junior employees in production and development. According to the Deadline, no additional cuts are expected.

The Power At Marvel Continues to Shift West

Over in New York, the latest round of cuts continues a trend as the center of power at Marvel has shifted from the East Coast to Burbank. The big domino fell last in March 2023, when Bob Iger finally rid himself of Marvel President, and longtime antagonist, Ike Perlmutter. In his final days, Perlmutter had overseen consumer products, comic books, game licensing, and arena shows.

After a difficult 2023, Marvel is also taking a deep breath and slowing its output. It is part of Disney’s overall strategy as it looks to reassert itself at the box office.

“The first step that we’ve taken is that we’ve reduced volume. We’ve reduced output, particularly at Marvel. When you fix or when you address these issues with — in movies, you do three things: You get aggressive at making sure the films you’re making can be even better, Bob Iger explained on Disney’s Q1 earnings call earlier this year.

“Sometimes, you kill projects you don’t believe in. And, of course, you put new things in the pipeline that you do believe in that you have much more confidence in, and we’re doing all of that.”

The Studio Is Set For a Big 2025

With 2025 looking to be a HUGE year for Marvel, it seems unlikely that Disney will thin the studio’s ranks again. Next year will see the release of Captain America: Brave New World, The Fantastic Four, and Thunderbolts*.

For now, however, Marvel is slowing things down.
