Despite the fact that the film was officially canceled 13 years ago, rumors continue to swirl that Spider-Man 4, starring Tobey Maguire, could still hit theaters.
The latest round of speculation was kicked off when Thomas Haden Church, who portrayed Sandman in Spider-Man 3, said that he had heard Sam Raimi was working on a fourth installment in his Spider-Man franchise.

Raimi would later clarify that he was doing no such thing and had not spoken with Marvel or Maguire about the possibility. Still, fans have continued to hold out hope.
Kirsten Dunst Talks ‘Spider-Man 4’
The latest Spider-Man cast member to chime in a possible fourth installment in the franchise is Kirsten Dunst, who portrayed Mary-Jane Watson in the first three films.

In an interview with GQ, the actress pitched her own idea for what Spider-Man 4 could be. Needless to say, it sounds intriguing.
“It would be funny to be like, OK. Let’s take Tobey [Maguire] and I and do it in a weird indie way where it’s like a different kind of superhero film. Like how they did that movie Chronicle. It could be cool,” Dunst said.

What Dunst advocates is a “found footage” style of film.
In a time where studios worry that “superhero fatigue” has set in, telling the story of Spider-Man 4 would certainly differentiate it from its peers.

Still, with a project as anticipated as Spider-Man 4 would be, Marvel and Sony would likely be better off playing it safe.
Dunst Would Return For a 4th Film
For now, Spider-Man 4 is still likely a pipe dream. Still, if Raimi were to direct another installment, Dunst would be willing to return.
“You get paid a lot of money, I have 2 children, and I support my mother,” she told Marie Claire.
