How ‘Doctor Strange’ Influenced the Look of ‘Moon Knight’

Part of the challenge for creators in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) these days is not repeating what has come before.

Not only has the MCU concluded the stories of some of Marvel’s most iconic characters like Iron Man, Captain America, and Black Widow, but stylistically speaking, the MCU has covered a lot of ground.

In the newly released Marvel Studios’ Moon Knight: The Art of the Series, Visual Development Supervisor Rodney Fuentebellare revealed that he ran into some roadblocks when designing elements of the series.

Creating ‘Moon Knight’s’ Portals

Perhaps the most impactful was when the team was designing the portals that Knoshu and Marc would use to enter the hidden Chamber of the Gods in Episode 3.

“We wanted to come up with some very interesting looks for what that kind of portal would be… We have already done so many portals— from Doctor Strange’s to Thanos’s—and I wanted to come up with something new that could work with our show and be fitting to Khonshu. Something that’s mysterious, something that’s a little dark, inspired by the moon and shadows.”

The Doctor Strange orange portals have since transcended the MCU and become instantly recognizable. Because of this, the design team went through many unique iterations of what the portals would look like

“In the first versions, the light that Khonshu is creating would create the shadow in this moon shape, and that moon shape would be the portal. In the ones after that, Khonshu himself would be the portal—the shadow would come from him. ”

Other Ideas

Other ideas included Khonshu tracing a moon-shape with his staff.

“In the ones on the top right, he is manipulating the walls, emitting some kind of glow. And, in the last ones, Khonshu is tracing a moon shape with his staff, and something happening in parallel on the wall would create the portal.”

In the end, the Moon Knight team created their own unique visuals by copying what came before it. It is a testament to the endless creativity in the MCU.
